Soloists

Ann Heeks

Ann was born in Worcestershire, the daughter of a pianist, and started learning the piano at the age of four. She had her first violin lesson at the age of eleven and soon became equally attracted to the viola. Later she became principal viola and then leader of the Midland Youth Orchestra. Serious study began at the Birmingham School of Music and she was much in demand as a freelance player. Ann studied viola and also the principles and psychology of teaching at the Trinity College of Music, London, and graduated with honours. Thus began a career of some repute, embracing both the professional and amateur circuits.

Since moving to Oldham, her busy career has involved playing and teaching. She is the General Secretary and a founder member of the West Pennine Music Festival and was for three years Chairman of the North West Area of the British Federation of Music Festivals.

Ann's performance the evening (Summer Concert, 1998) comes some eighteen months following the removal of a troublesome bone in her shoulder! Playing the violin is certainly not the most usual form of therapy, but a stubborn streak can be very useful. Many thanks to the surgeon and staff at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

The mother of three children, Ann is married to the principal clarinettist of the Huddersfield Philharmonic. Her daughter Dawn is a professional freelance viola player and teacher.

Kenneth Heeks

This evening's soloist studied with George Whitwell in Birmingham and with George Fuest (now principal clarinet of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra) at the Birmingham School of Music.

Kenneth has been principal of the Midland Youth Orchestra and both the Leicester and Aylesbury Symphony Orchestras. At present he is principal clarinet of the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra with whom he has appeared as a soloist playing the Finzi clarinet concerto. Kenneth is also chairman of the West Pennine Music Festival.
