James Pattinson

This is a portrait of James Pattinson

James Pattinson was born in Nottingham in 1981 and began studying the violin at twelve years old at his local comprehensive school in West Bridgford. Five years later he accepted a place at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester studying with Steven Wilkie. Whilst there, he held principal positions in all the college's major ensembles, and won a number of chamber music prizes as part of the Moretti String Quartet. He continued at the college on a Master's course with Yossi Zivoni which he completed in 2004. James now lives and works as a freelance violinist in Manchester, with orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Halle, English National Ballet, and the BBC Philharmonic. In May 2007 he played with the orchestra of Wexford Festival Opera, and this summer led the orchestra of Clonter Opera based in Cheshire. He plays first violin in the Allerton String Quartet with Adam Robinson, Raymond Lester, and cellist Damion Browne. As an orchestral player and chamber musician, James has travelled as far afield as Singapore, Switzerland, and the Seychelles, where he will return in May 2008 to co-lead the orchestra in their bi-annual classical music festival. James also works as a session musician, recording for artists such as Katie Melhua and Corinne Bailey-Rae, and in October this year played for a forthcoming BBC period film called 'The Duchess', with Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes. James plays on a violin by Nicolo Gagliano c. 1760.
