Farhan Shah

This is a portrait of Farhan Shah

Farhan Shah's first success in playing the violin was at the West Pennine Music Festival in 2001 at the age of 9, where he received an honours certificate for achieving top marks for his piece. Shortly after this he joined Oldham Music Centre and played in the chamber orchestra, youth orchestra and string quartet# Faz accepted a place at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music where he was leader of the 2nd violins in the chamber orchestra. He succesfully auditioned and was offered a place with the Halle Youth Orchestra and has performed at the Bridgewater Hall with them on many occasions; projects with the Halle have included working at the Royal Opera House with the Royal Ballet and Royal Opera House Singers. He took part in the Channel 4 TV series Orchestra United which followed a group of young musicians from diverse backgrounds and which saw him perform a solo violin concerto to a packed house at the Bridgewater Hall. As well as playing the violing Faz is also a beat-boxer and has performed at venues throughout the UK including Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and the opening of a Banksy Art Exhibition on beatbox and violin backed by hip-hop dancers. He has worked on many different projects with Greater Manchester Music Action Zone (GMMAZ), which saw him perform at the Lowry in Salford, Contact Theatre, the Roadhouse and Band on the Wall in Manchester. Faz was working on his Gold Arts Award with Peshkar and had written the script and music for a drama which was performed at Universiry Centre Oldham when his work caught the eye of the Director of Arts Council Englan, who invited him to perform on violin and beatbox at Shakespeare's Underglobe Theatre. In 2011, Faz worked as part of the orchestra for Victoria Wood's The Day We Sang production at the Manchester International Festival. The highlight of his year was an invitation to a Reception and Buckingham Palace for young people in the performing arts, where he met the Queen and Prince Philip and a host of celebrated and established artists. Faz is currently studying at the Leeds College of Music for a degree in classical music.
