Alpesh started playing the cello aged seven. In his hometown of Birmingham, he studied under Veronica Raven, Elaine Ackers and then Ulrich Heinen achieving a diploma in performance in the summer of 2007. He is now in his final year at the Royal Northern College of Music (on the cello), studying with Eduardo Vassallo and has secured a place on the Postgraduate Masters Conducting course at the RNCM for the next two years. His passion for conducting has emerged from his strong orchestral playing background including being principal cellist of CBSO Youth Orchestra from February 2008 - July 2010 and leading cello sections in other Midlands-based orchestras.

Alpesh began conducting at the age of 16, conducting school ensembles and local amateur orchestras. He has been involved in setting up various groups including St. Peter’s Sinfonia (made up of friends and local music teachers in Birmingham) and rehearsal orchestras in Manchester.

Aside from conducting invitations and initiatives, he has received some tuition from Mark Heron and Mark Shanahan whilst being mentored – since August 2007 – by Michael Seal. His associations with Michael Seal have led to Alpesh standing in for him at rehearsals for Birmingham Schools’ Symphony Orchestra (where Alpesh is now Assistant Conductor) and Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra, rehearsing works including Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s 5th and 6th Symphonies and Mahler’s 10th Symphony. Other conducting study includes his participation in the CBSO Youth Orchestra Academy Conducting Workshops (under Michael Seal) in the summers of 2007, 2009 and 2010 and also his taking part in the RNCM Conducting Weekends in 2009 and 2011. He has recently worked with Warrington Youth Orchestra, Oldham Symphony Orchestra and Liverpool Mozart Orchestra and is now working towards a concert with North Cheshire Wind Orchestra.

Through these various opportunities (both created and given), Alpesh has now worked with string orchestras, chamber orchestras, symphony orchestras, brass ensembles, woodwind ensembles and a choir in many different events. He also coaches sectionals in orchestras and on various courses (including chamber music coaching).

He has also learnt many skills by sitting in on rehearsals taken by Sir Simon Rattle, Sakari Oramo and Andris Nelsons and also by watching conducting masterclasses given by Sir Mark Elder and Gianandrea Noseda notwithstanding the plethora of things naturally learnt about conducting from sitting in an orchestra as a cellist playing under conductors including Jac van Steen, Martyn Brabbins and Pablo Heras-Casado.
