British violinist Laura Rickard started playing the violin aged six and is now in her second year at the Royal Academy of Music, studying under Professor Erich Gruenberg, having previously spent a year reading music at St. John’s College, Cambridge. Laura enjoys an active performing career, with recent concerto performances of Beethoven, Saint-Saëns and Sibelius, and an international debut with the Michoacan State Symphony Orchestra, Mexico. In June 2014, she made her Royal Festival Hall concerto debut with the Teresa Carreño Orchestra of Venezuela following a solo performance in the Purcell Room in 2013. Her performances have been broadcast on both radio and television; most recently, she featured in the launch of the BBC Proms on Radio 3 and gave a performance of Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto on TV stations across the Americas.
Laura has guest-led numerous orchestras including the Royal Academy String Orchestra and the Cambridge University Symphony, and she has spent two years as co-leader of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Laura has also worked alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic, in a cycle of Mahler symphonies, the London Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. She has played under conductors such as Vasily Petrenko, Gustavo Dudamel, Christian Thielemann and Christoph Dohnanyi in all of the UK’s major concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall, at the BBC Proms, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and she has performed at Buckingham Palace for the Queen.
As a chamber musician, Laura has collaborated with many internationally renowned quartets, including the Fitzwilliam, Miró and Henschel quartets, and the Grammy-winning Parker quartet. She has been a laureate of the National Schools Chamber Music Competition and the San Miguel Festival Competition and has toured Mexico and the USA. Laura has taken part in music festivals around the world, most notably the Stift Festival, in the Netherlands, and the Cadenza International Summer Music School, in London, and she held a fellowship in the 2014 Atlantic Music Festival, in the USA. Laura has participated in master classes with Tasmin Little, James Ehnes, Daniel Rowland and Alexander Sitkovetsky, and she has previously studied for six years with Academy Professor Remus Azoitei.
